St. Petersburg’s Hermitage Museum was based in the 18th century by Catherine the Great. It was located subsequent to the Winter Palace and was primarily used as a private gallery for the empress’ art collection. After the October Revolution of 1917, the collections all turned public property. Since the very beginning, the Victoria and Albert Museum was designed to level continue out off the world’s finest contemporary architecture and design. It opened in 1851 with the world’s first international display of design and manufacturing. It moved to its current location in 1857 and was often identified as the South Kensington Museum.
