Captain Smit Machchhar, an Indian aviator, has received widespread acclaim after overcoming his co-pilot during a violent cockpit dispute aboard a flydubai aircraft en route from Dubai to Tel Aviv. The plane entered a steep descent before making an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia.
Machchhar was the captain of flydubai Flight FZ1073, which was scheduled to travel from Dubai to Tel Aviv on Wednesday, when a violent altercation erupted in the cockpit.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a video statement that one of the pilots stabbed the other and allegedly attempted to crash the aircraft.
Background of Captain Smit Machchhar
According to his LinkedIn profile, the pilot has been working as a commercial aviator for more than 13 years. Before joining flydubai, he spent roughly 11 years with SpiceJet, gaining extensive experience on domestic routes.

He became part of the low-cost carrier in 2011 and remained with the airline until June 2022, when he transferred to his current position.
Incident on Flight FZ1073
The aircraft was cruising at about 34,000 feet when the incident unfolded, a typical cruising altitude for medium-range services. The flight transmitted emergency signals, one of which indicated possible unlawful interference, a standard alert for hijacking or violent events.
Flight-tracking data show that the plane dropped by roughly 14,000 feet in less than a minute, a rapid loss that would normally trigger an emergency response from air traffic controllers.
Passengers reported hearing screaming from the front of the cabin and seeing blood near the cockpit door, confirming that a violent struggle was taking place.
The captain was stabbed during the confrontation and sustained serious injuries. Despite his wounds, he managed to resist the attacker and opened the cockpit door, allowing passengers and crew members to overpower the assailant, according to the Israeli prime minister.

Other qualified crew members subsequently assumed control of the aircraft, diverted it to Saudi Arabia, and landed safely at Tabuk. The diversion was executed without further incident, and the aircraft came to a stop on the runway.
All 174 passengers on board survived the ordeal. Their survival was aided by the swift actions of the crew and the rapid descent that, while dangerous, allowed the plane to reach a lower altitude where a safe landing could be performed.
After the landing, the captain was taken to a hospital in Tabuk, where medical staff reported his condition as stable. He remained under observation for the injuries sustained during the stabbing.
US President Donald Trump likewise lauded the captain, calling him a hero during remarks in the Oval Office. Speaking to reporters, he said, “The pilot was in very bad shape; I guess he still is in very bad shape, but he had the sense to, amazing, to, in a way he was a hero.”
