South Korea is emerging as a key hub for investment innovation, as S&P Dow Jones Indices rolls out several of its latest strategies here ahead of other markets, Cameron Drinkwater, chief product and operations officer at S&P DJI, noted.
According to Drinkwater, the combination of discerning investors and creative financial companies turns Korea into an ideal laboratory for launching offerings such as multi-asset strategies, covered call strategies and thematic index products.
“It is a very important market for us not only because it is growing so quickly but also because of the amount of innovation that has been originating here,” Drinkwater told The Korea Herald in central Seoul on Tuesday.
During her trip to Seoul for Korea Premium Weeks, Drinkwater presented a keynote speech covering worldwide ETF developments and her perspective on the market.
She said Korean investors have a “high acumen around how to invest and how to use what we would think of as more advanced strategies,” making the country a “great test market.”
Its attractiveness goes past mere demand, since the ways Korean customers introduce new products can guide S&P DJI in tailoring worldwide investment techniques for other local markets.
Drinkwater noted that Korea’s strong retail adoption of crypto points to demand for features that could increasingly become standard expectations across investments, such as round-the-clock access and holdings consolidated in one digital wallet.
“What we believe is, generationally in particular, these unique attributes of on-chain investing are going to become expected no matter what the underlying technology is that supports them,” she said.
S&P DJI aims to place indexes like the S&P 500 onto blockchain platforms, allowing investors to reach familiar benchmarks through a different investment infrastructure.
Clear rules help investors and market participants commit with confidence that they are complying with regulations, she added.
