
The East Coast Rail Link cargo service has the potential to replace up to 79 lorries for every train trip, according to Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Hasbi Habibollah. An ECRL cargo train can transport up to 3,150 tonnes using 45 wagons in a single journey. This volume significantly exceeds what a standard lorry can handle. On average, a lorry carries a maximum load of roughly 40 tonnes per trip. Because of this difference, a single freight train can effectively take the place of dozens of trucks on the highway. The sheer scale of the train’s capability offers a stark contrast to the limitations of individual trucking operations. By consolidating freight onto the rail network, the system aims to handle bulk transport more efficiently than individual vehicles could ever manage. Based on an average load of 10 to 20 tonnes per lorry, this represents a reduction of roughly 3,300 to 6,700 long-haul trips per day. It is important to note that these figures are about trip reductions rather than the total removal of lorries, as local deliveries will still be necessary. However, the success of this transition relies on several factors.
